“While in Loliondo meeting with local water engineers, I found myself …watching (an old woman and two children) as they filled their containers with water in preparation for carrying their precious harvest back to the village. With the heavy containers lifted onto their backs, the smaller child then picked up a long stick and extended it out to the older woman. Clutching opposite ends of the stick, the grandmother and granddaughter slowly walked toward home. It was then I realized that the woman was blind and the children her guides through the darkness. “ Peter Verbiscar-Brown, Executive Director, Global Partners for Development, March 2004
Water is never taken for granted in East Africa; droughts are frequent when the rains fail. Natural water sources are few and far between, often requiring hours of walking carrying heavy buckets to obtain a few gallons. When a person is blind, like the older woman in this photo, water gathering is an overwhelming task for her even with the help of her grandchildren.
