In 1999 a women’s cooperative in the village of Bugarama, Uganda wanted to raise dairy cows for nutrition and income. Global Partners gave them 8 cows. Before a woman member received a cow, she was required to show the initiative to care for it, build an enclosure for her animal, have a source of fodder, a plan for purchasing veterinary services including vaccinations and insemination, and a plan for marketing the milk. The pre-planning helps to ensure success. In addition, the woman must agree to pass on the first born female calf as a gift to another family.
From this humble beginning, there are now 22 sponsored women’s groups in Uganda, including 13 original first-generation groups, 8 second-generation daughter groups, and 1 third-generation group, thanks to the pass-on programs.

Passing On the Gift is the heart and spirit of the Global Partners Animal Husbandry program; it is always a joyous occasion for the community celebrated with singing and dancing. The original gift of an animal increases many times over by means of passing on of the first-born female offspring to another woman. This is multiplied again and again throughout a year in other rural communities.
