“How could a person in America know that there are helpless women dying like grass hoppers in Kihanda and come to help ?” Jane Bagye, Chairperson, Kihanda Women’s Foundation.

Mrs. Bagye knows the cost of lack of access to health care. “In 1989 I had a pregnancy for my second born and I fell in labour at around 10:00pm. To mobilize people to carry me in a stretcher to the hospital was not easy. We left home at around 1:00am in the night and reached the hospital at dawn when the child died. It ended in operating me which almost led me to death.”

This experience focused Jane’s drive to change existing conditions and to start the Kihanda Women’s Foundation to ensure that no other woman would suffer what she had. Mobilizing local support, the Kihanda women rolled down rocks from the local hills and, with Global Partner’s assistance, built the community's first health clinic.

Children who are healthy can learn what they need to know for the future. Children suffering from malnutrition and malaria need all their strength just to get through the day.
