On one of Global Partners’ recent trips to Uganda, the travelers visited a village clinic and got a very poignant lesson in medical and health services delivery in rural East Africa, and why it lags so unimaginably far behind our own standard of care.

The medical staff, consisting of two nurses, opened the medical supplies cabinet to show the visitors the modest assortment of supplies they had in stock. Equipment was limited to a stethoscope and a blood pressure cuff. Supplies consisted entirely of some gauze, a partial roll of tape, a few disposable syringes, and a nearly empty bottle of disinfectant. Medicines included quinine and penicillin, nothing for pain relief, stomach, respiratory or other common local ailments. Clinic visitors are treated with what is available, not what is needed, and even then, only if they can afford it. This clinic serves a population of 5,000 people.

By partnering with other organizations, Global Partners creates the most cost effective method of sending medical equipment and supplies. Last year this program shipped over 4 million much-needed multiple vitamins to poor children and adults.
